Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry's standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum.

Since I was a young 22 year old studying at the Royal Military College Duntroon thru to now when some 26 years later, I have always enjoyed the challenge of speaking to teams and large groups and presenting. There is nothing more exciting than walking onto a stage with loud music pumping and seeing a big crowd.

In the Military I did a great deal of instructing and teaching but also those there were those wonderful emotional Anzac day speeches at schools, and outback RSL’s, and the team motivational talks as we were about to get in the back of a C130 to jump out in the dark over some bush with 30 other guys with a 25Kg pack strapped to your thighs with your house for the next few days.

In the commercial world it has been around a products, solutions, company profile, value propositions, but also big product launches and pitches to customers and the more testing times where I have had to had to announce lay-offs, restructures or in fact my own resignation from Cisco after 14 years and then Samsung after 14 months.

Whatever the situation when we get up in front of people and talk we need to make powerful statements and be impactful, we need to connect and leave the people you talk to with a sense of deep connection, make them understand your call to action, and generally inspire them. In essence we need to make a difference to them.

During the last 26 years of presenting and leading I have avoided the Autocue. When you present you are not a news reader, you are not a robot, you are human and you should be seen as being authentic. For those of you that don’t know a traditional “Autocue” is a closed circuit camera system to film a scrolling paper script and display the image on the monitor to the front of the camera. You may have seen at times when a news reader comes unstuck because the system fails… quite embarrassing but some are able to recover quite well.

A great example of this is this Year’s 2014 Computer Electronics Show where Samsung hired Michael Bay the director of “Transformers” to speak about the launch of a new curved TV screen. Michael got up on stage and within 1 minute he had lost it, he actually said that the type is all off and then he said “I will just wing it”. How embarrassing. He was asked about what inspires him how does he come up with these ideas. Sadly he could not really answer as he was so locked in to using the “autocue” he lost it and he walked off stage. One side of me felt very sorry for him and on the other had it should teach him a lesson about authenticity. Imagine the impact if he had said the following: Hey everyone I just have to tell you that they have asked me to use this teleprompter thing and I hate them so let me just tell you from the heart what I am feeling and share my passion with you straight up.” This would have made the AV people know to not bother with the technology, the other presenter would have just went along with the flow and the people would have loved him for it and accepted him as truly authentic.

When we get up and speak we need to be able to tell our story, convey our message with authenticity. Not by reading slides, or reading from a teleprompter. This ability does not come easily it takes a lot of hard work well before the event and it does not start by sitting at a desk and opening up Powerpoint.

In a nutshell by experience tells me that the following is a good way to prepare for your “story telling”

  • Decide on the impact: Ensure you are very clear on what is the 1or 2 things you want the audience to remember about you and the 3 things you want them to remember about what you say 3 hrs, 3 days, 3 weeks, 3 months, 3 years if they were asked about your speaking.
  • Story Boarding: Get in front of a whiteboard and draw the 2 things on the board and make sure they will help you achieve your objective (whatever that is) then work out how you can focus on the 3 things you want them to remember about your message. Remember depending on the length of your presentation you may only have 30 mins to get connected and lock your audience in to you and your 3 messages.
  • Write the story: Type up the full story using the standard presentation flow, opening, motivation/arousal, tell them what your key points are and why it is important they listen to you what are they going to get out of it, then launch into the 3 sections of your talk and ensure you link from one to the other and then summarise and highlight the 3 things again and thank them for their time.
  • Practise: Read the story whenever you can print it out and carry it with you make changes. Then as you get better you will find you can remember chunks by highlighting just key points.
  • Cut the Story back: Reduce the story by a third the number of pages or words and keep going till you can tell the story pretty well by only having key points
  • Artwork: Now you can work on your aids such as PPT or prezi or props that help you stick to your story and tell your story
  • Practise: Get in front of a video camera and practise more, Try and get on site or the stage with the crew or even in the room you’re going to use and do a session in that space and feel the space. Walk the stage and work out how you will move and use your aids and the AV systems.
  • Tell Your story: get out there and have fun, run thru the opening and introduction out loud in the shower as you’re driving when you’re running, get that nailed as that will make the emotional connection with the people this is the most important part of your talk.

So why is this important, if you are a leader or an aspiring leader and you need to be able to connect with the audience you are presenting/speaking to, you need to set the example for your team on the best way to do this and you need to be able to speak off the cuff about your passions and be able to have your key messages always coming out when your engaging with customers, partners, and your staff without being nervous of having to pull out a deck of slides or a teleprompter.

If you want some personal coaching on public speaking and preparing for your next story telling event you know who to call. Enjoy Andre Running Obradovic

LEADERSHIP INSIGHTS a story about running

During the last 16 years of working in Enterprise Sales, the companies I was tied to had specific metrics of performance that determined end of year ratings and where you sat on the Bell curve. Yes you will remember in the press recently that Microsoft just announced it was stopped using the bell curve to grade staff. The use of the bell curve is a whole other blog more on that latter.

Back to the original thought, those metrics were clearly understood, there was a supporting system that enabled us to capture the performance, the systems worked well, you could look at trends, and we had good leaders that provided guidance, feedback and coaching.

In a nutshell we could summarise the three elements of this as:

Planning: Which involves deep thought and insight into the end goal on your path; clear identification of metrics to ensure the metrics are achievable; allowance for stretch goals and alignment to a broader organisational goal. They are explicit and clear, and metrics align to the firm’s strategy, and your individual goals.

Monitoring: A structured activity of monitoring metrics against goals as a means of gauging your progress and define necessary adjustments to measures and strategies.

Learning: A continuous feedback loop that assesses progress, engages key stakeholders in identifying implications and new opportunities to support the firm’s metrics-driven goals.

After several years of detailed running Planning, I stopped using a coach and a training plan for my running training. I stopped Monitoring my performance in a system I had been using for many years, I stopped providing feedback to my running coach which meant I could not continue Learning.

My System for performance management had been compromised. A lack of discipline was the base root cause of this.

My performance dropped off, I put on weight and my running slowed from a 3.45 full marathon to a horrible 4.15 a year later.

One year made a huge difference. In Early October this year I approached my coach and we agreed on a new set of goals for 2014, these included a Planning regime, Monitoring and continuous Learning as key elements to my 12 month strategy. My goals were defined to drop my resting heart Rate to 39 BPM, to run an average running pace of 5 mins per KM and to run half marathon races during 2014 in under 1 hr 40 and the full marathon in New York under 4 hrs.

All are very clear and explicit. So the goals were set, the one problem was that my trusty old heart rate monitor was faulty and while it allowed me to note my run time, I could not change the screens to allow me to see my pace, or Heart rate while running, I could then not upload the data to that thing they call the interweb I was lost, I could not track my performance even though I had my goals, I could not Monitor or learn.

In the 3 weeks while I was waiting for my new Heart rate Monitor to come my training was in effective, not enjoyable, and a bit of a waste of time. My Motivation was low and I did not keep to my plan. My new tool for monitoring arrived this week and my whole world changed, I could feel the massive difference and relief as I could now properly Monitor my performance while running so I could adjust my pace, cadence and see my real time results as I was running those hills. As I ran up the driveway my watch automatically connected using the cloud thing and the data from my run was displayed on my application on my smart phone and computer, My coach could also log in and view my performance. He could then provide coaching and I could learn.

So why is this important? if you are a leader and you need to be very clear with your people about the three aspects that run the entire theme of this story.

If you don’t then fix it, your people will perform, you will be a more effective leader, and you and your people will be able to make those quick adjustments to compete in a turbulent market.

If you want to run come and join me. Out in Eltham on a Sunday Morning, or The tan on a Thursday Morning. Enjoy Andre Running Obradovic
